Open Question: i got a tooth pulled and im a smoker.?

How to prevent dry socket
1. Pre-operative oral hygiene - have your teeth cleaned before extraction to reduce plaque and bacteria
2. Use mouthwash with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate just before surgery and as irrigation after extraction
3. Stop smoking prior to surgery and 2 weeks after extraction
4. Avoid vigorous mouth rinse for the first 24 hours after extraction
5. Use gentle toothbrush and gentle mouth rinse with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate for at least a week after extraction
6. Follow the dentist instruction and see the dentist immediately if the pain increase after few days or bad taste coming out from the wound
7. For women who use oral contraceptives; schedule surgery during days 23 through 28 of the tablet cycle

Do the best you can.

Open Question: Wisdom teeth removal recovery problems?

Open Question: Wisdom teeth removal recovery problems?

I would definitely speak to your dentist right away. I had mine removed with little problem as well, and within a week the pain was gone (save for a faint discomfort at the actual gum where the wisdom teeth were removed). The only discomfort I would imagine you should be feeling now is just the stiffness in the jaw (this is usually from having your mouth pried wide open for the length of the surgery, this lasted for me about ten days before I felt I could talk/smile without any discomfort). If the wound is still hurting, you may have dry sockets (the pain should have decreased with every passing day, not stayed the same or increased), in which case you NEED to return to your dentist, they should have given you literature/lecture on this (this can develop during the healing process, usually in the first 2-5 days after surgery, so even a surgery without complications can result in dry sockets later, whether you're taking good care of the area or not).

As to the rest of your teeth hurting: I'm not an oral surgeon, but I don't believe that's normal, and you need to forget simply allowing people to reassure you and call the dentist and insist on going back in (they should have required you to schedule a follow up visit in the first week after surgery).

Wisdom tooth removal IS basic, but there are many complications that can occur during and after, simply because everyone has it done, and it hurts, doesn't mean that your pain at this point is normal. When in doubt, and when things are suspect, return to your doctor!

Good luck and I hope you feel better soon :)

I know i have to get braces in a few months or so and i really don't want actual braces. I heard that Invisilign takes way longer to straighten your teeth than regular braces.

How long do Invisilign braces take to straighten a few crooked teeth?

Does it actually work?

How often do you have to get new ones?

Resolved Question: Crest 3D white Strips question?

Resolved Question: Crest 3D white Strips question?

Hi, I am on the Crest 3D as well.

My dentist recommended them to me and told me specifically not to use a double dose, because I asked the same question. Apparently it's damaging to your teeth, and simply doubling up would not actually speed up the whitening process.

It's less about sensitivity and more about the real process that occurs. I've been on it for about two weeks now and I've seen tremendous progress with whiteness, and I've done the recommended dose.

Enjoy your soon-to-be whiter teeth!

Open Question: i have a kind of small gap in my two front teeth, how can i close it in 1 day?? please read details(:?

I have a gap in my teeth too, honestly, more people have a gap than you would think...
My gap is the only thing i've ever really been confident about though.
When i was at school, i always got told a lot of famous people had gaps in their teeth.
No ones going to think you're weird because you have a gap, seriously, and when you get older, you're going to realise, no guy is ever going to care about the gap in your teeth, its going to be more about your hair, your boobs, and your confidence.

If you play with your teeth and try and force your teeth together or something, you're only going to do damage. if your that bothered, see a dentist, see if they can fit you with a night time retainer, but nothings going to be fixed in a day. ;)

Open Question: Do braces hurt when. ?

Open Question: Do braces hurt when. ?

Well from my experience; and I've took them off just today! Yayy! :D
(I have "abnormally sensitive teeth" as to what my orthodontist told me.)
The more you tighten your braces, the less it would hurt, because usually it takes the first few times for the braces to make dramatic changes to your teeth! And you're still kinda adjusting to it.
As you see your teeth looking better, I'm sure it would hurt less each time! From first(very painful) to last (it felt like nothing happened.)
You'll be alright (: You will gradually adjust to it. Trust me (:

Right now, I'm trying to adjust to my new retainers! I can't even talk correctly without spitting at someone's face with it. D':

Open Question: Rough Spot Slight White Coloring Inside Mouth On Bottom Lip?

Okay, I am really starting to freak out,

Last night I was under the influence of certain substances (I don't need you to tell me that they are bad.)

While I was under the influence I sat on the couch for awhile, not exactly sure how long.
I randomly noticed that I had been chewing on my lip.
I tried to stop, but couldn't.

I noticed a rough slightly white spot on my bottom lip on the inside of my mouth.

I used to be a smoker but quit. I am sexually active, but always use protection. I think I drank out of someones cup who had mono once because we got them mixed up.

Is this be a sign of an STI or cancer or is it just from chewing my lip?

Should I wait a little bit and see if it goes away or should I go see someone soon. Do I need to see a doctor or my dentist? (My doctor is just a general healthcare provider)

And should I get an STI check before I go see my doctor?

Edit 1: It kind of hurts if I run my tongue on it rough or my teeth. It's not a bad pain, it's just there.

The spot is not dry, its moist like the rest of my mouth

Is this normal? I usually have sensitive teeth though.
Is it because those areas hasn't been touched with anything but glue for the past 2 years?

Open Question: Having problems with my teeth AND maybe oral thrush? My doctors aren't helping. Please help?

Open Question: Having problems with my teeth AND maybe oral thrush? My doctors aren't helping. Please help?

I'm having some problems with my teeth and I really need somebody's opinion. I'm 20 years old. About 3 weeks ago I noticed that my front two teeth felt slightly loose. Not visibly wiggly, but I could nudge them back and forth a tiny bit. It has now spread to my bottom teeth and maybe 6 teeth across. I went to the dentist TWICE. They said nothing was wrong and I might be grinding my teeth. It is NOT caused by grinding. For one, I've never had this problem before, I'm 20 years old, I'm not stressed, nothing has changed in my life in these three weeks. It is BETTER when I wake up, so I'm not grinding in my sleep. And what is most strange, is that it only happens when I eat/drink. If I don't eat or drink all day, it will be fine. Whenever I drink out of a straw especially, the "suck" face that I have to make is what make it feel weird, like all my teeth are pushing into my fronts. The dentists haven't helped WHATSOEVER.

Now I don't know if this is related, but I've been having some issues with what looks like oral thrush in the back of my mouth for the same amount of time. I've been having what feels like a vaginal yeast infection as a side effect of some antibiotics I took a few months ago. My regular doctor hasn't been helping with this either. I went for an exam and no sign of yeast or bacteria infection was found, but he gave me some medicine anyway. I've been on the medicine for a month (1 pill a week), and it's not helping. It has kept it from getting worse, but it's not gone. I don't know if oral thrush can be spread that way, since both oral and vaginal has to do with yeast infections, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Please help if you can, any ideas would truly be appreciated. My doctors are WORTHLESS.

Open Question: Would you buy a tooth brush if...?

Open Question: Would you buy a tooth brush if...?

Is the floss refillable? If not, it'll be useless before the toothbrush.

Also, does the floss interfere with the toothbrush standing up in a cup or is it more on the side?

And when the water from the toothbrush (after rinsing it off) runs down the handle, will the floss get wet or germy? I personally lay my toothbrush down, but most people stand theirs up with the head up.

Changeble heads are available on the electric toothbrushes, but not for kids electrics. I would buy one for my kids for sure. They are very hard on toothbrushes and if I don't have to spend $6+ every two months, I'd be more likely to get them the electric brush. They don't really use floss, though. They're too young.

For myself, talking about just the interchangeable head (not electric toothbrush), if the price point was going to make it cheaper than just buying a new toothbrush, then yes, I'd buy it. It would be great if the interchangeble head worked with different size heads or styles, not just one, so I might try out the newest fad in toothbrushes.

As for the floss, though, that wouldn't be a selling feature for me. Maybe a little pick that you could unfold from the side of the brush. That might be useful.

Open Question: Trauma to my gums last weekend? helpp!?

The other day I picked up my blowdry REALLY fast and hit my face. Stupid me, I know. I looked in the mirror and my gums above the tooth right next to my front tooth was bleeding. I rinsed right away with mouthwash and it stopped. This was Saturday night/Sunday morning. It does not really hurt, the tooth at all. But the gums are sore. Red and now there is a bump on top of my gum, where I can literally poke it and see it move, like there is water in there or whatnot. The bump is also kinda swollen and I think its on top of the tooth a bit.

I just spent a fortune on crowns, so I really do not want to go back to the dentist. However, I think atleast an office visit and antibiotics are in order. What could this be??

Open Question: How does teeth whitening really work?

Open Question: How does teeth whitening really work?

When toothpastes have a tooth whitening component?
When chewing gums have a tooth whitening component?
When you use baking soda?
When you go get your teeth professionally whitened?

I was thinking of doing the last option, because since they're 'professionals' they should know whats the safest, most efficient way to whiten teeth?

I've heard baking soda is a soft abrasive, but abrasives on teeth, no matter how soft, don't sound like a good idea. Also, what are the pros and cons for each of the above, in terms of 1) getting the job done and 2) safety (for your teeth).

Open Question: I'm so scared about root canal!?

Stop worrying

Root canals are not as painful as they used to be, since they no longer use silver stanks to fill the nerve cavity but a rubber-type mixture instead.

You will be completely anesthetized during the procedure and will not feel a thing. Afterwards, telly your doctor you want a painkiller like vicodin, but trust me, it will not hurt that bad afterwards.

I just had two done myself.

Open Question: Should I get my wisdom teeth taken out?

Open Question: Should I get my wisdom teeth taken out?

Hmm, when it came time for me to do the wisdom teeth thing, the good news was there were only 3. The bad news is that they were all on their sides and impacting my other teeth. They had to go in and literally grind them out! So, I consider you you lucky so far.

I would think the main reason why you want them out, assuming everything else is going smooth for you, would be impacting and/or crowding of your other teeth. Our family background tends toward crooked, overlapping teeth anyhow, and when the orthodontic work was done years ago, removal of some teeth to make room was a big part of it.

So, bottomline, if they are causing your regular teeth to crowd, you will probably be better off without them. (standard disclaimers apply).

Open Question: Are some people more prone to plaque build-up on their teeth?

Open Question: Are some people more prone to plaque build-up on their teeth?

I went to a new dentist today (I moved four years ago and hadn't arranged for a new dentist until now), and the dentist began lecturing me on how to properly brush and floss, as he said I had what looked like several days worth of plaque near my gum line on my side/back teeth, and a tiny area on one bottom tooth that might turn into a cavity (so I have to have it sealed). He also told me the gums in these same side/back areas looked slightly irritated (I hadn't noticed any discomfort before but he did a great deal of scraping near the gum line and it still hurts). He went on about how if I didn't start brushing/flossing properly then the plaque build-up could eventually turn into some serious problems causing my teeth to begin crumbling/decaying. I scheduled my cleaning (this was just a new patient exam) and was almost crying when I left (I had asked if I was extremely careful if I could avoid having these potential problems and he seemed very gloomy saying "well if you're absolutely religious and change your habits then you might be able to prevent 99% of the problems").

The problem is, I have always been extremely careful about brushing well with an electric toothbrush after meals, and flossing at least 1-2 times a day. I've never had cavities of any kind, and at all of my twice yearly cleanings at other dentists (I'm 24 years old, my last dental exam/cleaning was 4 years ago), they've always commented on how excellent my teeth are.

My question is: is it possible that something has changed (my eating habits/hygiene haven't) to make me suddenly more prone to plaque building up? I asked the dentist if something else could be causing the problem (telling him that I'm very careful about my oral hygiene and have never been told I have problems with plaque before), but he was adamant that I just "must not be brushing and flossing as well as you think". If I thought this was the real reason I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it just seemed extremely odd; I would have thought if I had been doing these things ineffectively for the past 18-20 years, and if those habits were the culprit, that I would have shown signs of this much earlier in life, rather than just now. I don't deny there is some issue now (I just never noticed in the past 4 years) but I'm afraid that if I'm already doing things right that the problem isn't what the dentist is insisting it is. For the time being (I have 3 weeks until my appointment) I've decided to use a waterpik, and a Sonicare toothbrush to try and be extra careful with my teeth. But is it possible that something else is wrong? Or is it perhaps just because I haven't had a really deep cleaning at a dentist in 4 years? I'm extremely nervous now because I felt as though the dentist didn't believe me when I said I did brush/floss, and it made me afraid that something could be wrong and they won't catch it because they just believe I don't know how to brush my teeth.

I apologize for sounding extremely paranoid, but my mother has horrible teeth problems because her family couldn't afford dental work when she was little, and I'm terrified of having anything similar happen.

Open Question: My girlfriend is 6 months pregnant should she get a root canal?

If your endodontist feels that you can wait until after delivery to have a rootcanal done, he or she will let you know, since it is best to delay any procedure while carrying a fetus.

However, root canals rarely give one an option of waiting.

t is perfectly fine to have a root canal during pregnancy since the option is to carry a risk of a bad infection, or have a painful extraction of the tooth. Tell your endodontist please.

A root canal is not something that can be postponed, and is not as major as you think. It involves removing the usually infected center of a tooth and replacing it with a neutral agent. It is best to get this done, since the tooh in question cannot be allowed to remain as is.

The root canal procedure is usually done under a local and not general anesthetic for a short period of time.

Here are web sites which say it is safe to have this procedure during pregnancy.

Open Question: help please im getting teeth pulled and have a few questions?!?

Baby teeth come out so easily! I had to get a cavity removed, and while they were doing that they were just like, "Oh dang girl you still have a baby tooth here, well let's just pop that out..." and I didn't even feel a thing. .__. Compared to the grinding noises and the yanking they had to do with my molar, anyway. The gums around the area of my baby tooth was a little loose, but compared to the giant crater my molar tooth made?

... Yeah, I'm comparing those two a lot. XD Nevertheless, there's nothing to worry about. They're not going to torture you. A good dentist will make sure you're comfortable.

I currently have braces on (fncking up my life, just generally making me feel like sh!t), anyway, I went to see my orthodontist like 3 maybe 4 weeks ago, just a general check up. He didn't say much, all he said was "oh, your wisdom teeth are coming through." That's it, literally. I'm almost 16 and it's the first time he mentioned it. How long aprox until I have to have them removed?

I'm seeing him tomorrow but he wouldn't do it then would he?

Open Question: how painful and scary is the tooth extraction? :-(?

Open Question: how painful and scary is the tooth extraction? :-(?

It depends on what tooth it is...

In my opinion, you should get yourself a male dentist. I felt better when the dentist was a female, but she had such a lame grip and she was yanking and grinding my teeth for 20 freaking minutes before it finally came out. @__@ Sometimes, her pliers would sometimes scrape against my teeth and I'd feel it reverberate throughout my entire mouth.

It WASN'T painful though. You don't have to be worried about the actual experience at all. It's afterwards that hurts the most, when the numbing begins to wear off.

I'd never visited the dentist before. I experienced all kinds of anxieties that you wouldn't even BELIEVE. What I did was accept that it was going to happen, that I should face my fear and get it over with. And then I looked forward. Just keep looking forward. In a week, your mouth will be perfect, your tooth won't burden you anymore, and you'll have survived a visit to the dentist. It's quite an enlightening feeling! 8D

Open Question: My dentist prescrined me Metronidazole, for jaw and neck ache, can I drink alcohol while taking?

No no no no no! I have just come off it and have a follow up today. Its related to a drug given to alcoholics and drinking ANY alcohol should be totally avoided. It can cause blackouts and sever vomiting if you drink while on it.

If you drink it causes the drug to attack your cells as well as any bacteria and will REALLY make you unwell.

DONT DO IT!

This is causing my whole jaw to pain. Is this normal? Someone told me maybe the extraction has made my gum sensitive. Pls help and give advice how I can lessen the pain. ThxAnswer Question

The mom by The mom Member since:September 16, 2006Total points:99,851 (Level 7)When you remove a tooth, you leave behind not just a hole in the gums, but a tooth-size hole in the jawbone itself. In your case, two tooth-size holes. If you had holes of that size in your upper leg bone, you'd not be surprised that it ached and hurt. However in your case, you may also have jaw pain due to developing a dry socket. That happens when the clot that seals off the hole in the bone is lost, and the bone dehydrates. That pain typically shows up sometime between the third and fifth days after removal, and will gradually get worst until it's about all you can think about. It might be best if you returned to see the dentist and had things checked out. You might get some relief temporarily by applying moist mild heat to the outside of the face, and drinking a hot drink and pooling some of the liquid in the cheek pocket for a bit. If it's a dry socket, this will give some relief, but not completely. If it's just healing pain, it will help- as will something like Motrin. Hope it gets to feeling better for you soon.

Member since:July 10, 2007Total points:411 (Level 2)There is no real way to "cure" tooth decay, for once the tooth structure is lost due to decay, you can not regain it. However, there are things you can do naturally to arrest the caries, and prevent the decay from progressing further. First, limit your consumption of acidic, and sugary foods. Next, eliminate frequent snacking (you should eat three meals a day, and not eat between meals, this allows your saliva to return to a neutral pH, which is not good for cariogenic bacteria, they like acidic pH to continue the destruction of your teeth). Brush and floss after every meal, using toothpaste with fluoride, which helps remineralize the natural tooth structures, and fight off bacteria. Again, this can help to slow the destructive process of the bacteria, but it is usually best to see a dentist to have the decay removed, the teeth restored, and taking the aforementioned nutritional and hygienic steps to prevent further decay.

Open Question: Couldn't they remove the molars first before the wisdom teeth come in?

Open Question: Couldn't they remove the molars first before the wisdom teeth come in?

Hypothetically. XD Basically making space for the wisdom teeth instead of taking the wisdom teeth out when they do come in. I mean, aren't molars easier to take out? Especially since they're not all crowded. D: Couldn't this be a plausible technique?

I'm by no means a dentist, by the way... but I just couldn't help but recall when I got one of my molars taken out due to cavity. They didn't have to knock me out or anything, no surgery required where they had to cut my gums and stuff... and now I have space in my upper left side for when my wisdom tooth comes in. Just not in all of the other ones. ;___;

Or do wisdom teeth ALWAYS come out funky no matter how much space you have? I'm not sure... @_@;

So far, fluoride toothpaste/antisensitivity toothpaste and brushing with fluoride gel hasn't worked.
I don't care if the trays work 50%, I just want at least SOME improvement because I'm sick of this pain.
I don't care if I have to wear the trays for a year, I just want improvement.

Open Question: Question regarding clear retainers!? (orthodontist)?

Hi everyone!
I got my braces off about a week ago and the other day I went and they gave me my retainers which are the clear ones that pop on. I know she told me I should NOT soak them in water and she gave me some solution that it's like a little tab, I haven't opened it yet because I had some questions and figured before I call the office I could ask for help here:

1. Is it okay like after I take them out before I put them back on to just run the water and CLEAN out the retainers? Not soaking but just putting it under the water for 2 seconds and that's it, or will that cause damage?

2. How often should I clean them?

I am going to call my orthodontist no matter what, but I have to wait 3 days because their office is only open certain days. Just figured since I can't sleep I could use the help, thanks so much!

We will charge for a root canal and core build up. Sometimes, only if the tooth was broken down real bad, the doctor will have the patient come back for a composite on the tooth also. When I ask him about this he says the composite is a separate procedure from the corebuildup and it is a separate charge. He states that the corebuild up is only the material to seal up the hole he has made to acess the root canal. He doesn't do this all the time. Only when the outside of the tooth is badly decayed. I do not feel as if I should be charging the patient for a composite also. I would think that the composite would be part of the core buildup. Open Question: Best enamel toothpaste?

Open Question: Best enamel toothpaste?

There are many toothpastes that protect enamel and in turn help your tooth restore it's own dentine

The toothpaste doesn't actually give the tooth new enamel or dentine as such it just protects them better.

Tooth whitening kits are notorious for stripping your enamel and making your teeth sensitive.

I just use Sensodyne Gentle Whitening as other whitening pastes are abrasive and also damage your teeth.

Or if you are in the US (as I'm not sure US has Sensodyne) Arm and Hammer are good but to be honest there are loads out there.

Do NOT drink carbonated drinks, no sucking on a straw or anything with sucking motions. Nothing with seeds, like berries, no rice,

Open Question: Does it hurt getting your wisdom teeth removed?

Open Question: Does it hurt getting your wisdom teeth removed?

I think it really depends on your dentist. Wisdom teeth are pretty deep and it can take some hard pulling and levering to get them out but a good dentist will give you adequate pain relief and not make too much of a meal of the extraction. It does ache a bit afterward but not more than a couple of doses of paracetamol or ibuprofen will sort out.

To prepare for it, try to relax. I know that it won't be easy but do some deep breathing and focus on something nice and relaxing if you can. The more you tense up, the more likely it is to hurt.

If you are really, really nervous, ask your dentist about sedation or try to get referred to a dental hospital where they can offer you sedation and you can sleep right through the whole procedure.

Resolved Question: Can my dentist remove me from his NHS list for not attending a 6 monthly check-up?

GP's have patient lists
Under current arrangements dentists do not have any such thing as patient lists and new or returning patients have same priority on nhs services most of the time.

NICE guidelines assume attendance is only needed every two years if you were in perfect health and with perfect teeth (very rare)

The dentist should not be booking return appointments for you. If you were told 12months at your last check up a re-call within 6 months seem wrong.

I would recommend sending a copy of the letter to the PAL's department of your local PCT or at least threaten to if they do not make you an appointment when you need one.

(you are classed as having an NHS dentist if you have been seen in the last 24 months though this is not the same as being on a dentists list as such)

I am a primary care finance analyst so this is my day job.

Open Question: I am having one of my back teeth removed tomorrow, Will it Hurt? I'm very nervous...?

Ha ha. Tooth...nerve-ous. Get it?

Yes, pain. Treated with anesthesia. The more of a wimp you are about it, the less the stuff works. And after a couple needles worth of pain and the stuff sets in, you probably have gas coming to keep you chill for the procedure. Relax.

Now that you don't feel pain in your nerves, you have to deal with major discomfort of pulling and stretching. It feels weird. But relax, none of this compares too...

The first morning after before you take your pain medication, and then trying to brush your teeth.

Member since:July 10, 2007Total points:411 (Level 2)They both do the same thing, so why not get Invisalign, since most dentists/orthodontists charge the same fee for either (very rarely do they charge more for Invisalign). If I had the option to get Invisalign back in 1994 when I got braces, I definitely would have chosen Invisalign. Remember, however, that there are limitations to the severity of malocclusion that Invisalign will treat, which is why your ortho/dentist knows best.Rae by Rae Member since:August 13, 2009Total points:9,901 (Level 5)I chose Invisalign but if I was a teenager I totally would have gone with braces. Invisalign is more expensive, takes more time, need more dedication from the patient and is more of a hassle. You have to pop it out to eat and drink anything except for water and then go brush and floss your teeth after and pop it in. They will not work if you do not wear them between 20-22 hours a day so you need to be sure to not keep them out. Braces are easier, take less time, and are cheaper.
