Open Question: i got a tooth pulled and im a smoker.?
1. Pre-operative oral hygiene - have your teeth cleaned before extraction to reduce plaque and bacteria
2. Use mouthwash with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate just before surgery and as irrigation after extraction
3. Stop smoking prior to surgery and 2 weeks after extraction
4. Avoid vigorous mouth rinse for the first 24 hours after extraction
5. Use gentle toothbrush and gentle mouth rinse with 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate for at least a week after extraction
6. Follow the dentist instruction and see the dentist immediately if the pain increase after few days or bad taste coming out from the wound
7. For women who use oral contraceptives; schedule surgery during days 23 through 28 of the tablet cycle
Do the best you can.
Open Question: What do I need to major in college to become a dentist/dental hygienist?
Open Question: Wisdom teeth removal recovery problems?
As to the rest of your teeth hurting: I'm not an oral surgeon, but I don't believe that's normal, and you need to forget simply allowing people to reassure you and call the dentist and insist on going back in (they should have required you to schedule a follow up visit in the first week after surgery).
Wisdom tooth removal IS basic, but there are many complications that can occur during and after, simply because everyone has it done, and it hurts, doesn't mean that your pain at this point is normal. When in doubt, and when things are suspect, return to your doctor!
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon :)

Resolved Question: Crest 3D white Strips question?
My dentist recommended them to me and told me specifically not to use a double dose, because I asked the same question. Apparently it's damaging to your teeth, and simply doubling up would not actually speed up the whitening process.
It's less about sensitivity and more about the real process that occurs. I've been on it for about two weeks now and I've seen tremendous progress with whiteness, and I've done the recommended dose.
Enjoy your soon-to-be whiter teeth!

My gap is the only thing i've ever really been confident about though.
When i was at school, i always got told a lot of famous people had gaps in their teeth.
No ones going to think you're weird because you have a gap, seriously, and when you get older, you're going to realise, no guy is ever going to care about the gap in your teeth, its going to be more about your hair, your boobs, and your confidence.
If you play with your teeth and try and force your teeth together or something, you're only going to do damage. if your that bothered, see a dentist, see if they can fit you with a night time retainer, but nothings going to be fixed in a day. ;)
Open Question: Do braces hurt when. ?
(I have "abnormally sensitive teeth" as to what my orthodontist told me.)
The more you tighten your braces, the less it would hurt, because usually it takes the first few times for the braces to make dramatic changes to your teeth! And you're still kinda adjusting to it.
As you see your teeth looking better, I'm sure it would hurt less each time! From first(very painful) to last (it felt like nothing happened.)
You'll be alright (: You will gradually adjust to it. Trust me (:
Right now, I'm trying to adjust to my new retainers! I can't even talk correctly without spitting at someone's face with it. D':

Open Question: Rough Spot Slight White Coloring Inside Mouth On Bottom Lip?
Last night I was under the influence of certain substances (I don't need you to tell me that they are bad.)
While I was under the influence I sat on the couch for awhile, not exactly sure how long.
I randomly noticed that I had been chewing on my lip.
I tried to stop, but couldn't.
I noticed a rough slightly white spot on my bottom lip on the inside of my mouth.
I used to be a smoker but quit. I am sexually active, but always use protection. I think I drank out of someones cup who had mono once because we got them mixed up.
Is this be a sign of an STI or cancer or is it just from chewing my lip?
Should I wait a little bit and see if it goes away or should I go see someone soon. Do I need to see a doctor or my dentist? (My doctor is just a general healthcare provider)
And should I get an STI check before I go see my doctor?
Edit 1: It kind of hurts if I run my tongue on it rough or my teeth. It's not a bad pain, it's just there. The spot is not dry, its moist like the rest of my mouth

Open Question: Having problems with my teeth AND maybe oral thrush? My doctors aren't helping. Please help?
Now I don't know if this is related, but I've been having some issues with what looks like oral thrush in the back of my mouth for the same amount of time. I've been having what feels like a vaginal yeast infection as a side effect of some antibiotics I took a few months ago. My regular doctor hasn't been helping with this either. I went for an exam and no sign of yeast or bacteria infection was found, but he gave me some medicine anyway. I've been on the medicine for a month (1 pill a week), and it's not helping. It has kept it from getting worse, but it's not gone. I don't know if oral thrush can be spread that way, since both oral and vaginal has to do with yeast infections, but I thought I'd bring it up.
Please help if you can, any ideas would truly be appreciated. My doctors are WORTHLESS.

Open Question: How much do braces hurt and for how long?
You'll get used to it within a couple days. Get ready lots of yogurt.
Open Question: Would you buy a tooth brush if...?
Also, does the floss interfere with the toothbrush standing up in a cup or is it more on the side?
And when the water from the toothbrush (after rinsing it off) runs down the handle, will the floss get wet or germy? I personally lay my toothbrush down, but most people stand theirs up with the head up.
Changeble heads are available on the electric toothbrushes, but not for kids electrics. I would buy one for my kids for sure. They are very hard on toothbrushes and if I don't have to spend $6+ every two months, I'd be more likely to get them the electric brush. They don't really use floss, though. They're too young.
For myself, talking about just the interchangeable head (not electric toothbrush), if the price point was going to make it cheaper than just buying a new toothbrush, then yes, I'd buy it. It would be great if the interchangeble head worked with different size heads or styles, not just one, so I might try out the newest fad in toothbrushes.
As for the floss, though, that wouldn't be a selling feature for me. Maybe a little pick that you could unfold from the side of the brush. That might be useful.

Open Question: How does teeth whitening really work?
When chewing gums have a tooth whitening component?
When you use baking soda?
When you go get your teeth professionally whitened?
I was thinking of doing the last option, because since they're 'professionals' they should know whats the safest, most efficient way to whiten teeth?
I've heard baking soda is a soft abrasive, but abrasives on teeth, no matter how soft, don't sound like a good idea. Also, what are the pros and cons for each of the above, in terms of 1) getting the job done and 2) safety (for your teeth).
Thanks :)
Open Question: I'm so scared about root canal!?
Root canals are not as painful as they used to be, since they no longer use silver stanks to fill the nerve cavity but a rubber-type mixture instead.
You will be completely anesthetized during the procedure and will not feel a thing. Afterwards, telly your doctor you want a painkiller like vicodin, but trust me, it will not hurt that bad afterwards.
I just had two done myself.

Open Question: Should I get my wisdom teeth taken out?
I would think the main reason why you want them out, assuming everything else is going smooth for you, would be impacting and/or crowding of your other teeth. Our family background tends toward crooked, overlapping teeth anyhow, and when the orthodontic work was done years ago, removal of some teeth to make room was a big part of it.
So, bottomline, if they are causing your regular teeth to crowd, you will probably be better off without them. (standard disclaimers apply).
Open Question: Are some people more prone to plaque build-up on their teeth?
The problem is, I have always been extremely careful about brushing well with an electric toothbrush after meals, and flossing at least 1-2 times a day. I've never had cavities of any kind, and at all of my twice yearly cleanings at other dentists (I'm 24 years old, my last dental exam/cleaning was 4 years ago), they've always commented on how excellent my teeth are.
My question is: is it possible that something has changed (my eating habits/hygiene haven't) to make me suddenly more prone to plaque building up? I asked the dentist if something else could be causing the problem (telling him that I'm very careful about my oral hygiene and have never been told I have problems with plaque before), but he was adamant that I just "must not be brushing and flossing as well as you think". If I thought this was the real reason I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it just seemed extremely odd; I would have thought if I had been doing these things ineffectively for the past 18-20 years, and if those habits were the culprit, that I would have shown signs of this much earlier in life, rather than just now. I don't deny there is some issue now (I just never noticed in the past 4 years) but I'm afraid that if I'm already doing things right that the problem isn't what the dentist is insisting it is. For the time being (I have 3 weeks until my appointment) I've decided to use a waterpik, and a Sonicare toothbrush to try and be extra careful with my teeth. But is it possible that something else is wrong? Or is it perhaps just because I haven't had a really deep cleaning at a dentist in 4 years? I'm extremely nervous now because I felt as though the dentist didn't believe me when I said I did brush/floss, and it made me afraid that something could be wrong and they won't catch it because they just believe I don't know how to brush my teeth.
I apologize for sounding extremely paranoid, but my mother has horrible teeth problems because her family couldn't afford dental work when she was little, and I'm terrified of having anything similar happen.

Open Question: My girlfriend is 6 months pregnant should she get a root canal?
However, root canals rarely give one an option of waiting.
t is perfectly fine to have a root canal during pregnancy since the option is to carry a risk of a bad infection, or have a painful extraction of the tooth. Tell your endodontist please.
A root canal is not something that can be postponed, and is not as major as you think. It involves removing the usually infected center of a tooth and replacing it with a neutral agent. It is best to get this done, since the tooh in question cannot be allowed to remain as is.
The root canal procedure is usually done under a local and not general anesthetic for a short period of time.
Here are web sites which say it is safe to have this procedure during pregnancy.

Open Question: Is it possible for a person to never have tooth cavities?
Open Question: what colors or patterns should i get for my braces?
Open Question: how painful and scary is the tooth extraction? :-(?
In my opinion, you should get yourself a male dentist. I felt better when the dentist was a female, but she had such a lame grip and she was yanking and grinding my teeth for 20 freaking minutes before it finally came out. @__@ Sometimes, her pliers would sometimes scrape against my teeth and I'd feel it reverberate throughout my entire mouth.
It WASN'T painful though. You don't have to be worried about the actual experience at all. It's afterwards that hurts the most, when the numbing begins to wear off.
I'd never visited the dentist before. I experienced all kinds of anxieties that you wouldn't even BELIEVE. What I did was accept that it was going to happen, that I should face my fear and get it over with. And then I looked forward. Just keep looking forward. In a week, your mouth will be perfect, your tooth won't burden you anymore, and you'll have survived a visit to the dentist. It's quite an enlightening feeling! 8D

Open Question: Question regarding clear retainers!? (orthodontist)?
I got my braces off about a week ago and the other day I went and they gave me my retainers which are the clear ones that pop on. I know she told me I should NOT soak them in water and she gave me some solution that it's like a little tab, I haven't opened it yet because I had some questions and figured before I call the office I could ask for help here:
1. Is it okay like after I take them out before I put them back on to just run the water and CLEAN out the retainers? Not soaking but just putting it under the water for 2 seconds and that's it, or will that cause damage?
2. How often should I clean them?
I am going to call my orthodontist no matter what, but I have to wait 3 days because their office is only open certain days. Just figured since I can't sleep I could use the help, thanks so much!

The toothpaste doesn't actually give the tooth new enamel or dentine as such it just protects them better.
Tooth whitening kits are notorious for stripping your enamel and making your teeth sensitive.

Or if you are in the US (as I'm not sure US has Sensodyne) Arm and Hammer are good but to be honest there are loads out there.

To prepare for it, try to relax. I know that it won't be easy but do some deep breathing and focus on something nice and relaxing if you can. The more you tense up, the more likely it is to hurt.
If you are really, really nervous, ask your dentist about sedation or try to get referred to a dental hospital where they can offer you sedation and you can sleep right through the whole procedure.
Open Question: Bands for braces making me ill what can I do?
Resolved Question: Can my dentist remove me from his NHS list for not attending a 6 monthly check-up?
Under current arrangements dentists do not have any such thing as patient lists and new or returning patients have same priority on nhs services most of the time.
NICE guidelines assume attendance is only needed every two years if you were in perfect health and with perfect teeth (very rare)
The dentist should not be booking return appointments for you. If you were told 12months at your last check up a re-call within 6 months seem wrong.
I would recommend sending a copy of the letter to the PAL's department of your local PCT or at least threaten to if they do not make you an appointment when you need one.
(you are classed as having an NHS dentist if you have been seen in the last 24 months though this is not the same as being on a dentists list as such)

Open Question: I am having one of my back teeth removed tomorrow, Will it Hurt? I'm very nervous...?
Yes, pain. Treated with anesthesia. The more of a wimp you are about it, the less the stuff works. And after a couple needles worth of pain and the stuff sets in, you probably have gas coming to keep you chill for the procedure. Relax.
Now that you don't feel pain in your nerves, you have to deal with major discomfort of pulling and stretching. It feels weird. But relax, none of this compares too...
The first morning after before you take your pain medication, and then trying to brush your teeth.
