I think it really depends on your dentist. Wisdom teeth are pretty deep and it can take some hard pulling and levering to get them out but a good dentist will give you adequate pain relief and not make too much of a meal of the extraction. It does ache a bit afterward but not more than a couple of doses of paracetamol or ibuprofen will sort out.

To prepare for it, try to relax. I know that it won't be easy but do some deep breathing and focus on something nice and relaxing if you can. The more you tense up, the more likely it is to hurt.

If you are really, really nervous, ask your dentist about sedation or try to get referred to a dental hospital where they can offer you sedation and you can sleep right through the whole procedure.
