Open Question: How does teeth whitening really work?

When toothpastes have a tooth whitening component?
When chewing gums have a tooth whitening component?
When you use baking soda?
When you go get your teeth professionally whitened?

I was thinking of doing the last option, because since they're 'professionals' they should know whats the safest, most efficient way to whiten teeth?

I've heard baking soda is a soft abrasive, but abrasives on teeth, no matter how soft, don't sound like a good idea. Also, what are the pros and cons for each of the above, in terms of 1) getting the job done and 2) safety (for your teeth).

Thanks :)
