Open Question: How long is it safe to leave a dental infection?

About two and a half weeks ago I noticed that one of my teeth was feeling sensitive to touch and the gum was slightly swollen. I saw the dentist last week and a dental infection was diagnosed. Apparently the tooth had already died which is why the pain was not so great.

I want to try to save the tooth but the dentist can't see me for root canal treatment until July 19th. She has prescribed antibiotics but I am nearly at the end of the course and the tooth is no better.
I suffer with frequent migraines anyway but I have been getting them every day for several days and I am wondering if the tooth is triggering them.

Does anyone know how long it is safe to leave a dental infection. I have read alarming things on the internet about neglected ones but it never says how long they were left.

I'm wondering whether to have it out and be done with it as she can do that earlier because I wouldn't need such a long appointment.
