Open Question: What can cause pain in wisdom tooth sockets?

I never had dry socket, infection, or any other major complication from the surgery, though the oral surgeon did tell me he had to leave a little fragment of root in one of the sockets to avoid nerve damage. In the past month or so, I've started to have pain in the area of the socket that's supposed to have the root fragment. The pain is worse with chewing on that side; I'm not sure if it's the pressure of chewing or the feeling of something brushing up against the gum that's causing the pain. The area's also become cold-sensitive. I went to the dentist and he couldn't find any cavities or any reason for the pain. He's given me a referral to an oral surgeon to have it checked more thoroughly, but I have no dental insurance, so that's going to cost me a lot of money, and I'm not sure I'm willing to spend a bunch on a consultation that may or may not be helpful. But the pain seems to be getting worse. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Do you think it would be worth it to see the oral surgeon about this?Answer Question
