When you're between the ages of like 16-21 your face goes changes structurally and that will make your teeth shift unless you wear your retainer. Most people only wear them at night, a few times a week. So no not forever, just until your finished changing :)

Retainers are only to keep your teeth in place without the braces, but it can be removed when the orthodontist knows your teeth won't go back to before. Just brush your teeth really well, and keep up with appointments. Eventually you'll have to wear rubber bands, and if you wear them everyday, you'll have your braces on for less time. The bands are only for fixing your bite, over or underbite. Be careful about what you eat- sugar free gum won't hurt, and watch out when you eat popcorn. And other hard foods. Like if you want an apple, cut it into slices. It gets expensive when you have to replace broken braces! Anyways, those were Just a few extra tips to help you along the way. Anymore questions will probably be answered by your orthodontist, or you can ask him! and your teeth WILL be sore, depending on if you get the new braces or the kind that have the color. The color ones don't hurt as long, but will still hurt. It'll hurt to eat, so i recommend Carnation instant breakfast or Special K protein shakes. They'll fill you up while your mouth is too sore to eat! Hope this helps!
