Very, very desperate to help a friend get some dental work that he seriously needs done. Please, help me out?
Hello, everyone! I've come here looking for advice on how to help my friend. Here it goes:
My friend is 25 (26 at the end of May) & is in need of some dental work. He was addicted to methamphetamine for a few years, & because of that has very bad teeth, cavities, missing teeth, chipped, etc. He is married, but the relationship with his wife isn't so great. She's what I call a "one-track mind" sort of person where everything in the marriage is 100% her & 0% him. If it doesn't benefit her in anyway, it doesn't happen (he was abused as a kid, so he really doesn't argue her because he's "used" to it). She just graduated a 2 year college & right now, they are living together in some rundown dorm/apts owned by the school's president.
They did have a house until they separated for about 5/6 mo. & when they got back together he moved into the apt with her. Since she's graduated, they’ll be moving in with me & my family for a little bit until they can get back on their feet. With the economy being the way it is, the 3 of us are currently unemployed. My friend has been denied insurance (they live in Bristol, Va., & when they move in with me will be in Bristol, Tn.), cannot afford to pay for his own, & has been told by the Department of Social Services that he was only eligible for food stamps which he receives. He would see about applying for TENNcare when he moves in with me, but they only cover dental until 18 years of age as I’m understanding it.
He has tried Healing Hands back about 8 mo. ago which he was denied, & he has also tried 2 or 3 other places like Healing Hands (I can't recall what he said the names were) but was also denied. My mom gave me the name of a place called "Friends in Need" & I found their website, but it states that to be eligible, you must live with someone with a job. My mom & grandma who I live with have jobs, so I don't know if that will count, once they move in.
My point is: I don’t know how to help him. He’s going to contact the place that my mom gave me & see what they tell him, but unfortunately, I’m afraid it’ll turn out just like the rest of the places. He’s such a sweetheart & I desperately want to find him some help. Not only does it not look so great, it’s also dangerous to his health. His mother doesn’t want anything to do with him & he has no contact with his father, or any other family members for that fact, & his wife’s selfish & doesn’t care.
The dental work he would need would either be several implants or bridges, crowns, fillings, root canals (basically the whole 9 yards), or he has said he would be fine with just having them all pulled and having dentures. But with him still being young, I’d want dentures to be the last option if nothing else.
I really care about my friend, & if I had the money it would take to get his teeth fixed, I would happily do it, but I don't. If I could make modest payments through any organizations like mentioned above, whatever I could afford, I would do that also. If anyone can offer me any ideas, organizations, advice, anything that I could use to help him, I would appreciate more than anything. Thank you.
