Open Question: Why do my gums bleed when i brush my teeth?

Hello
sounds like you have the start of gum disease. If you do not floss your gums plaque and bacteria build up over time and cause the gums to become inflamed and puffy. When you then brush your teeth your gums will them bleed. You need to brush your teeth 2 times a day with a soft headed tooth brush and then floss once a day just before bed. You need to floss as you need to remove the plaque and food a tooth brush cannot reach . Also do not brush too hard as this can damage your gums and make them recede and can also brush away your tooth enamel. Your gums are soft tissue and do not need scrubbing. You need to be gentle and take care cleaning your teeth.

If you have not been flossing your teeth, plaque on your gums eventually turns hard( tartar) and forms pockets in your gums. Plaque will make your gums bleed when brushed. When you first start flossing, your gums will bleed but keep doing it once a day and as the plaque is removed and the inflammation goes down, the bleeding will stop. Your gums should not bleed when brushed and should look healthy and pink and tight around the teeth.

Also eating the right diet will help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Avoid sugar( causes plaque and decay) and avoid acidic foods and drinks( weakens tooth enamel ). Things like coke and fruit juices and oranges soften your tooth enamel and decay can get into your teeth faster. Drink plenty of water and if you do drink or eat acidic foods rinse your mouth out after to rinse away the acid.

So start flossing every night before bed and I bet your gums will stop bleeding in a few days time. What I do each day is brush in the morning and then floss my teeth before bed, then brush, then use a Colgate Fluorigard mouth wash( this hardens tooth enamel and prevents decay by 40%). I had a problem with bleeding gums in the past but since flossing every day they never bleed. And flossing your teeth can actually extend your life and prevent heart disease and strokes.

hope that helps and happy flossing
