Open Question: Is it ok if my dentist doesn't put temporary crown in my tooth after putting a post?

Root canal and crowning on this tooth was done few years ago. He said, he will do the surgery on my gum since the tooth inside has rotten a little bit and put a post inside it and then put a permanent crown. He said he will not put a temporary crown when I asked him about it. I thought he would put a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent crown to protect my tooth. In the past I have always had temporary crowns whenever I was waiting for the permanent ones. So, I am confused if it is okay to not have a temporary crown. Don't I need a temporary crown to protect my tooth?
