How to widen the dental arches as an adult?

Is there any way as an adult to widen the dental arches without surgery?
Does any one knows what kind of appliances are use, or can braces alone do the job?

An active appliance must be used to widen arches because braces are not strong enough. A Schwarz plate or transverse appliance and Crozats are the most common removable appliances used to expand upper jaws. There are also several fixed appliances that may be used and these are cemented in place and can not be taken out of the mouth. These include a Hyrax, a Quad-Helix, and a Rapid Palatal Expander (aka RPE). Lower jaws can be expanded with a variety of appliances some of which include Crozats and a lower Schwarz. Expansion in adults in possible but not stable so permanent retainer wear will be necessary.
