Can a root tooth infection go unnoticed with regular 6 month visits to the dentist?

....as well as full X-rays every 6 months (i think thats what i got). Also, less than a year ago i got my wisdom teeth removed.

After going on a 5 day fast, i had some severe tooth sensitivity on my left side & couldnt chew so i decided to stop puttin off seeing a dentist. I have recently moved about 3 months ago, & before that i had always been seeing the same dentist. I thought she was a good dentist?
After going to the dentist today, they discovered that i have had a root tooth infection for the past 5 years, & if i saw it & remember it correctly, think it was measured 12.1mm or sumthin??? im not sure about this, but anyway it was like 6xs the size of what a normal infection is supposed to look like. I dont have a filling leak & he said that the gums seemed fine so the infection cause is unknown.
He said I have to get a root canal asap & if that doesnt work, get that tooth removed.

Anyways my point is how in the world could my dentists have missed this while taking regular dental X rays??? I mean i even got my wisdom teeth taken out & i went thru some real bad pain on that side but i thought it was just normal n now i know why but like nobody caught it! & he said that anyone with that big of an infection would be in excuciating pain? I'm not in any of that sorts of pain at all. He also said i could have gotten lots throat pains from swallowing puss which is funny cause after my fast i could not swallow for like 3 days after but i figured that just came to some ppl with fasting but now im starting to think that my body became weak & showed that weakness & the puss is what caused the throat infection type thing i had.
He said this is uncommon in young people, & i used to go to a children's dentist, could this be why??? im 18.

I feel really weird about this i know i have really awful teeth but i mean, should i check it out with another dentist first or call the root canal dude & have it done before it gets too late. This is the only dentist i could get to see me on shorter notice & its close thats why i went there.
