The gums bellow your bottom teeth and above your upper teeth, are you supposed to brush them?

BQ: It really hurts when i brush them, brushed partly gums partly teeth since the ends are more yellow. Hurts even if lightly and if done normally it would hurt for 2 days. I have really bad teeth and just did it for the first time. Is this normal or should i stop?
